“Sound Healing is the intentional use of sound to create an environment which becomes a catalyst for healing in the physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual aspects of our being” according to Zacciah Blackburn’s definition.

Many know of the Sanskrit Om, a symbol that represents primordial sound in Hindu cosmology, the mantra A-u-m, and the geometrical Sri Yantra, a visual representation of the creative force of the Universe. Through sight, sound, and vibration, our senses enable us to experience and resonate with om. Shamans Market offers a line of sound healing items from Ohm Therapeutics, including tuning forks, quartz singing bowls and music CDs, as well as introducing the driving force behind Ohm Therapeutics, Marjorie de Muynck.

In the realm of music, composer Marjorie de Muynck, (pronounced de Monk), proposed that Om, (also spelled Ohm), is our collective musical center, and may be the fundamental tone from which ancient and contemporary musical scales and their intervallic systems evolved.

Born into a musical family, Marjorie de Muynck’s interest in tuning forks, sound and vibration was awakened at an early age. She first held a tuning fork in 1963 to tune her guitar, and then began applying the sound vibration to her own body-a sign of things to come. She was re-introduced to healing with tuning forks in 1981 from the piano player in her band after suffering from migraine headaches. Her clinical interest in Sound Healing and tuning forks grew and coalesced in 1995 when she co-founded the Kairo’s Institute of Sound Healing; co-developed the Acutonics® sound healing system and co-authored the textbook, There’s No Place Like Ohm: Sound Healing, Oriental Medicine and the Cosmic Mysteries. Marjorie co-developed a healing treatment called Harmonic Attunement®, which incorporates the use of cosmically tuned symphonic gongs, tuning forks, didgeridoos, rattles, Tibetan bowls, and bells. Marjorie de Muynck also studied Huichol Shamanism with Brant Secunda and was very interested in the indigenous use of sound for healing.

In 2000 Marjorie began a series of pioneering musical compositions in the key of Ohm: There’s No Place Like Ohm Volumes 1 & Volume 2 , In the Key of Earth and Vibrational Healing Music. Each of these Sound Healing recordings are composed in what has become Marjorie’s signature tuning of Ohm.

Marjorie’s eclectic mix of experience as a musician, composer, recording artist, healing arts practitioner, and educator, combined with her scientific understanding of vibration and sound, led her to create Ohm Therapeutics™ Sound Healing, a comprehensive vibrational healing system which combines the application of Ohm Tuning Forks, Crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, and other sound healing tools with music composed in the healing frequency of Ohm. In 2008, Marjorie’s book, Sound Healing: Vibrational Healing with Ohm Tuning Forks, a practical application manual with DVD, was published by Lemniscate Music.

Why ohm?

Aligning ourselves with the Earth is one of the most important things we can do at this time in our history. By connecting with the elements and observing the natural rhythms and cycles of the Earth, we can find homeostasis, balance, and grounding. Homeostasis is the balanced environment of our body and its automatic tendency to maintain this internal stability in the presence of external stimuli. Not an easy task in this fast-paced world! Nonetheless, a balanced environment is key to the healing process and to our overall well-being. Listening to the ohm tone and feeling its vibration directed on the body through music, tuning forks, or bowls is an ideal way to find that calm center, or still point, where healing begins. After working with numerous cosmic and diatonic frequencies over the past 30 years, my research now is intensively focused on the ohm frequency. In my clinical experience, I find ohm to be incredibly therapeutic and have chosen it as the fundamental tone in my healing practices.

In the realm of sound healing, Marjorie was often asked, “Why ohm?” Her answer was really quite simple: Ohm is our home tone, our spiritual center, and a place of safety. It is a temporary refuge from the intensity of the world.

She goes on to say: “Ohm also is spelled om and aum, however I spell ohm with an “h.” Traditionally the “o” represents birth and the “m” represents death. By adding the “h,” the intention is to add the element of breath – to infuse this ancient word, mantra, and frequency with added healing potential for use in therapeutic applications and settings. Ohm is an ancient and sacred tone that is universally recognized, scientifically based, and spiritually upheld. Its roots are in a natural cycle, based on the elliptical orbit of the Earth as it travels around the sun through four seasons, which explains why I consider ohm to be our musical center of gravity. Our body in its natural intelligence can assimilate ohm and all its overtones and utilize these healing properties on a vibratory level.”

Experiencing the ohm tone can:

• Restore balance and clear stagnant energy in a room
• Strengthen the body’s immune system
• Stimulate the body’s healing process
• Relax tight and sore aching muscles
• Promote the flow of energy in and around your body
• Enhance massage and other bodywork therapies.

Marjorie says, “I often liken the power of sound to that of homeopathy. Both work through resonance on an energetic level, and both homeopathy and sound, through vibration, direct the body to find its healing way. This approach to Sound Healing is based in a fundamental trust in the body’s natural proclivity and ability to heal itself. Listening to the ohm tone helps us to temporarily neutralize or clear the bombardment of daily external stimuli such as computer emissions, electronic devices, and radio wave frequencies. When we use the expression ‘reset your vibrational motherboard’ we are using a technology metaphor and applying the same concept to our own nervous system. We all know what it means to blow a fuse. When we go to the breaker box to flip a switch, we attempt to clear and reset the circuits. Working with ohm is like flipping the switch. The ohm tone has a uniquely grounding quality, which makes it an ideal sound frequency to work with in the healing arts.”

Ohm Therapeutics Tuning Forks

Shamans Market carries the line of Ohm Therapeutics Tuning Forks. Made to very high quality standards they work with the premier tuning fork manufacturer in the US. Their forks are made with a space & medical grade aluminum alloy and are precision tuned to within 0.5% of their indicated frequency. They do not color their forks to reduce environmental impact, because both anodizing and painting (which requires an additional degreasing process) are toxic to the environment.

Ohm Therapeutics offers six Ohm Tuning Forks (five octaves of Ohm) in the following range: The Mid-Ohm, the classic Ohm frequency, is 136.1 hz. The Low-Ohm is a lower octave, measuring 68.05 hz, and the Osteo Ohm measures 34 hz. The High OhmTuning Forks are higher octaves of Ohm, respectively 272.2 hz and 544.4 hz. The highest frequency offered is the Sonic OhmTuning Fork at 1088.8 hz. The hertz measurement, otherwise known as cycles per second, is the numerical representation of the vibrational tone of Ohm.

The Luna Tuning Forks and the Planetary 5th are considered a more advanced application. Their use builds upon an understanding of the therapeutic application of Ohm and its octaves. The frequency of the Mid Luna Tuning Fork is 210.42 hz and is the measured frequency of the synodic phase of the moon (new moon); the Low Luna is one octave lower at 105.21 hz. Combine Luna with Ohm to create the Planetary 5th which refers to both the Luna 5th (Mid Ohm + Mid Luna) and the Low Luna 5th (Low Ohm + Low Luna).

You’ll find the complete line of Ohm Therapeutic Tuning Forks on the market at Ohm Therapeutics Tuning Forks.
